My Go-To Remedies - Life On The Road Edition

There’s something about travelling with a family that makes you realise just how much life happens when you’re away from home.

A scraped knee at a campsite. A mozzie bite that becomes incredibly itchy. A child who suddenly develops a fever in the middle of nowhere. A bump, bruise, emotional upset or tummy that isn’t quite happy after a day of travelling.

After spending so much time on the road with my own family, I’ve found that having a small, thoughtfully chosen first-aid kit gives me peace of mind.

These are the homeopathic remedies I personally reach for most often when travelling with my family.

My road-trip essentials

Arnica — bumps, bruises & knocks

Arnica is probably one of the first remedies I think of when packing a family first-aid kit.

It’s traditionally used in homeopathy after physical knocks, bumps, bruising and muscle soreness.

And let's be honest — when you’re travelling with children, there are plenty of opportunities for a few bumps and bruises!

I keep Arnica close for those moments when someone has had a tumble, knocked themselves or is feeling sore after a physically demanding day.

My go-to for:
Bumps • bruises • falls • muscle soreness • physical knocks

Calendula — the skin healer

Calendula is another staple in my travel kit.

I reach for it when we have minor cuts, grazes or superficial skin injuries where I want to support the body's natural healing process.

Travelling means bare feet, bikes, rocks, beaches, camping equipment and plenty of opportunities for little grazes.

A good first-aid kit should always include the basics for cleaning and protecting a wound, and Calendula can sit alongside those essentials as complementary support.

My go-to for:
Minor cuts • grazes • superficial skin injuries

Hypericum — those nerve-rich areas

Hypericum is one I particularly like having available when an injury involves an area that feels especially sensitive or nerve-rich.

Think fingers, toes or areas where the pain feels sharp, shooting or unusually sensitive after an injury.

My go-to for:
Minor injuries with pronounced sensitivity or nerve-type pain

Apis — bites, stings & swelling

When you’re travelling, especially camping or spending lots of time outdoors, bites and stings are almost inevitable.

Apis is one of the remedies I keep on hand when there is sudden swelling, redness, heat and itching following an insect bite or sting.

As always, with any sting or bite, keep an eye on the person's overall response. If there is facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, collapse or any signs of a severe allergic reaction, seek emergency medical care immediately.

My go-to for:
Insect bites • stings • itching • localised swelling

Ledum — punctures & bites

Ledum is another classic remedy I like having in the travel kit, particularly when there has been a puncture-type injury or an insect bite.

It is traditionally considered when the affected area feels cold rather than hot and when the injury is more painful than it appears.

My go-to for:
Puncture wounds • insect bites • minor outdoor injuries

For any significant puncture wound, animal bite or wound that may be contaminated, proper medical assessment and wound care are important.

Urtica urens — the itchy one

Urtica urens is one I associate with those intensely itchy, stinging skin reactions.

It can be a useful remedy to have tucked away when you're travelling, particularly when you're spending lots of time outdoors.

My go-to for:
Itchy skin reactions • stinging sensations • minor bites or skin irritation

For the nervous system & emotional side of travel

First aid isn't always physical.

Travelling can be exciting, stimulating and sometimes completely overwhelming — particularly for little nervous systems.

A change in environment, long drives, unfamiliar beds, heat, crowds, new experiences and disrupted routines can all take their toll.

These are some of the remedies I keep in mind for those moments.

Aconite — sudden fright

Aconite is one I think of when something happens suddenly and there is an immediate reaction of fear or fright.

It may come into consideration after a sudden scare, shock or frightening experience.

Think: sudden • intense • frightened • shocked

Belladonna — sudden heat & intensity

Belladonna is traditionally considered in homeopathy when symptoms come on suddenly and intensely, particularly when there is marked heat, flushing and sensitivity.

It is important not to use a remedy choice as a reason to delay assessment of a sick child.

Think: sudden • hot • flushed • intense

Gelsemium — anticipation & overwhelm

Gelsemium is one I think about when someone becomes shaky, tired, heavy or overwhelmed around anticipation or an upcoming event.

For travelling families, this can sometimes be relevant around big transitions — although the individual picture always matters when selecting a homeopathic remedy.

Think: anticipation • trembling • heaviness • exhaustion

The travelling tummy

A change in food, routine, meal times and environment can be enough to upset even the most robust travelling tummy.

Nux vomica — overindulgence & overstimulation

Nux vomica is a classic remedy that I think about when someone has simply had too much.

Too much food. Too much rich food. Too much stimulation. Too little sleep.

It is traditionally considered when there is digestive discomfort alongside irritability and that feeling of being completely overdone.

Think: overindulgence • rich food • irritability • overstimulation

Arsenicum album — unsettled & anxious

Arsenicum album is another remedy I like having available when there is a combination of digestive upset, restlessness and anxiety.

The individual symptom picture matters, rather than simply matching a diagnosis to a remedy.

Think: digestive upset • restlessness • anxiety • wanting reassurance

Pulsatilla — rich food & change

Pulsatilla is another classic travel remedy to have in your kit.

It can come into consideration when digestive symptoms follow rich or fatty foods, particularly when the person is gentle, clingy or wanting lots of reassurance.

Think: rich food • digestive upset • change • needing comfort
